Research is instrumental in advancing medical treatments

We want better brain health for all Danes and aim to create the world's best prevention and treatment of brain diseases. We will do this by bringing together and integrating research, patient care, and education in a unique environment where international perspective, collaboration, and community engagement make up the foundation.

We know that breakthroughs in research happen when we gain new perspectives on our knowledge. We want to be innovative and open our doors to the public, so everyone can learn more about the healthy and diseased brain.

At the Danish Neuroscience Center, researchers and clinicians from Aarhus University Hospital and Aarhus University will work together in an environment close to the patients. This proximity has been shown to shorten the path from new ideas and discoveries for new medical treatments.

Brain diseases are a major challenge

Brain diseases pose both a personal and societal challenge. One in three Danes will experience a disease affecting the brain during their lifetime, and the overall societal consequences are enormous – both for the individual, their relatives and the societal costs. Behind these numbers, we find people with Parkinson's, schizophrenia, epilepsy, and brain injuries – all in need of better treatment and a deeper understanding of brain functions.

The societal costs amount to more than 230 billion DKK annually in direct and indirect expenses. The data is based on a report from Aarhus University Hospital and Aarhus University, published in Lancet Regional Health Europe in 2024.
